Sophia’s Quinceañera

June 10, 2023 – Bermuda

I got matched with a new little sister through Big Brothers Big Sisters. She’s going away for the summer, but just before that, I got invited to her Quinceañera! This is a Latin custom where the coming of age of a girl at 15 years old is celebrated as a rite of passage to becoming a young woman.

Sophia arrived with her entourage on a horse-drawn carriage. Wow! We’ve only been matched for a few days at this point and didn’t know anyone there. But we all came outside to watch the arrival, and I stood with her younger sister.

Then Sophia made the big entrance and walked all the way around the room and down the aisles to the front with everyone happily cheering on her. There was lots of family there and also some friends from school.

There was a part of the ceremony where her dad took off her old shoes (the child’s shoes) and replaced them with her lovely new young lady shoes.

Then afterward, she had her first dance with her dad then her mom, and then the music just kept going and basically everybody who was there in support of her danced with her for a little while. I am sure her feet must have really hurt! That was a lot of dancing.

The decorations and cake were really really nice. Her mom and family truly went all out.

Zoë Graduation

May 24, 2023 – Bermuda

Zoë is graduating from BHS Bermuda High School! Congratulations!!

Here they come walking up to the front where they sit and wait for all the speeches and presentations. One of the girls played a piano piece for everyone.

And then of course the all-important diploma presentations. Zoë was mentioned for her creative work.

Once the ceremony was over everybody mingled and got pictures with the graduates. There was a really nice cake too. Even though it was windy, we managed some nice outside picks as well.

We all took Zoë out for a lovely dinner at the Hamilton Princess. Zoë and I shared a humongous seafood tower. It certainly kept us busy working through everything that was there.

Afterward, the girls got ready for a fancy night out just on their own. They looked so fabulous!

Zoë Art Exhibit

March 17, 2023 – Bermuda

For her graduating year, Zoë was tasked with creating an entire art exhibit. I wasn’t able to go to the main opening, but I got a private viewing later on instead!

And there was a theme behind the entire display.

I was super impressed with her work. All of the pieces had cohesion and just like any full-fledged art gallery, each piece had a descriptive text telling you what the artwork was about. It just looks like so much work to produce all those pieces to put all the thought behind it and then all the structure of the hand-knitted spider webs that link it all together. Amazing work Zoë!
